Industry Fair 2023 | 29th November

Welcome to the Industry Fair XL!

We look forward to meeting you in Leeuwarden for a day of interaction, networking and knowledge sharing. Please read the information below carefully, so you know what you can expect. If you have any further questions, please reach out to meeting u via [email protected].

Participating students,

This edition of this Industry Fair is the first time in which three programs of NHL Stenden join forces. This means that during the event, you have the opportunity to meet many different types of students. To make it easier for you to recognize which type of student you are talking to, each group of students has a different colored lanyard.

Hotel Management School

You can recognise the Hotel Management School students by their pink lanyard. They conduct a 10 months internship in the fourth year of their studies. The following types of students are present from Hotel Management School:

  • 2nd year Bachelor Hotel Management School students
  • 3rd year Bachelor Hotel Management School students
  • Master in Hospitality and Service Management students (they are searching for jobs instead of internships)
  • 1st and 2nd year Associate Degree students (If interested to proceed with bachelor they are orientating for their fourth year bachelor internship. Or their Graduation in the second year where the student needs to write an advisory report for a hospitality minded company. They might be searching for a company where they can write this report about/for).

Leisure & Events Management

You can recognise the Leisure & Events Management students by their turquoise lanyard. The Leisure & Events Management students who follow a 2 year AD programme have a 320 hour internship in their programme during the second year, and the students who follow the 4 year Bachelor programme conduct a 840 hour internship in their 4th and final year. The following types of students are present from Leisure & Events Management:

  • 2nd year Bachelor Leisure & Events Management
  • 3rd year Bachelor Leisure & Events Management
  • Master in Leisure, Tourism & Events Management (they are searching for jobs instead of internships)
  • 1st and 2nd year Associate Degree students (are mostly visiting to network)

Tourism Management

You can recognise the Tourism Management students by their blue lanyard. The Tourism Management students who study the 2 year AD programme have a 5 months internship in their programme during the second year, and the students who follow the 4 year Bachelor programme do a 7 month internship in their 4th and final year. The following types of students are present from Tourism Management:

  • 2nd year Bachelor Tourism Management
  • 3rd year Bachelor Tourism Management
  • Master in Leisure, Tourism & Events Management (they are searching for jobs instead of internships)
  • 1st and 2nd year Associate Degree students (are mostly visiting to network)

You can recognise the ROC Noorderpoort students who follow a secondary vocational education (Manager ondernemer Horeca) by their black lanyard with yellow letters. They are mostly visiting to network with the companies.

Internship & Contracts

Due to the difference in programs, there are also different agreements for hiring students as interns. Behind your stand, you will have a logo of the education that your company has a contract/agreement with, so students can easily find you. Chances are, you will also run into students from programs that you might not have a collaboration with yet, who are interested in your company. For clarity purposes, we hereby provide an overview of the set-up of internship programs for each of the participating academies. If you are interested in expanding your existing partnership to other academies within NHL Stenden, we are more than happy to discuss. The contact person per academy is mentioned below.
Below you can find an overview of the monthly allowance per programme and other agreements:

Hotel Management School

Our Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality Management is a four-year programme, with the objective to educate students for management positions in organizations with hospitality at their core. Around 550 Hotel Management School students go on internship each year, with the majority starting in September or February. A hospitality component is mandatory for HMS internships.

SUMMARIZED TERMS & CONDITIONS:

  • Duration:
    • Standard internship: 42 weeks (10 months), excluding holidays.
    • An internship can start all year round.
  • Working Hours:
    • Netherlands: According to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CAO).
    • Other countries: Comply with local government employment laws.
    • The student spends 4 days per week working in your company, as well as approximately 1 day per week working on a consultancy project for your company.
  • Time Allocation:
    • Companies agree to a contractual time allocation for practical internship and consultancy project.
  • Allowance:
    • Contractually determined allowance.
    • Netherlands (as of Jan 2024): Minimum €750 gross/month, including potential accommodation/travel.
    • International: Minimum €500 gross/month.
  • Supervision & Guidance:
    • HMS assigns an internship coach for each trainee, who will guide and assess the student from the schools perspective.
    • The internship coach acts as the contact person for the company, assesses reports and plans at least two (virtual) meetings with the trainee and their company supervisor.

If you do not have a collaboration yet, but wish to discuss possibilities? Please contact Hotel Management School Leeuwarden via industryoffice.hms@nhlstenden.com

Leisure & Events Management

The placement (internship) is an important part of the study Leisure & Events Management. It is the opportunity to transform gained knowledge and experience into a real life situation at a professional end level. The placement consists of 840 hours, and the total length of the period depends on the number of days per week that the student does his/her placement. The placement can be combined with the execution of a practical research assignment (professional product), but this is not a must.

Students usually choose their placement organization, based on interest and motivation, but also based on the opportunities that the organization has to offer. To guarantee the quality of the placements, we have formulated some guidelines and criteria which placement organizations should meet:

  • One of the guidelines is that a placement organization has a minimum of 5 employees. This enables the student to develop himself within a (complex) organization and to use his/her social and communicative skills
  • The placement organization has to be an active player in one of the six sectors of our LEM industry:
    • Events
    • Tourism
    • Recreation
    • Arts & Culture
    • Sports
    • Media
  • There is a suitable workplace available for the student (online and/or offline) and a professional work environment is guaranteed. While this work environment obviously differs per situation, and depends on the nature of the organization, it is specifically not ideal that the student works “at home, at the kitchen table of the owner/placement company”.
  • Safety, health and wellbeing of the student need to be always guaranteed
  • We advise a financial compensation for placement, of approximately €450, – per month.

  • During the placement, the student should have sufficient opportunities to function and develop himself within complex organizations.
  • During the placement, the student should be able to learn how to work and deal with various stakeholders, such as guests/visitors, colleagues, supervisors, management.
  • During the placement, the student should be able to learn, practice and develop social and communicative skills in practical situations.
  • During the placement, the student should be able to (further) develop his professional attitude towards the future LEM industry.
  • During the placement, the student should be confronted with practical examples/cases of the LEM industry.
  • During the placement, the student should get plenty of opportunities to work on the Programme Learning Outcomes, connected to the Graduation Phase of the study LEM (see placement manual)

  • The coach from the placement company, should be available at least half (50%) of the time, and at least every week
  • Coaching from the placement company should consist at least out of one person, and maximum three people.
  • The coach from the placement company should have at least a bachelor’s degree.
  • The coach from the placement company cannot be a relative of the student.
Tourism Management
  • There are no specific rules about a mandatory internship allowance for the Tourism Management students; we see, however, that the allowance is one of the most important reasons for the students to accept an internship position or not.
  • The Tourism Management student works 36 hours per week for the company and dedicates 4 hours per week to the assignment they have to do for school.
  • An internship can start at any day of the year; most students, however, will start in September or February.
  • The company appoints a company supervisor, who guides the student through the internship; Tourism Management appoints an NHL Stenden supervisor, who guides the process, and grades the reports made by the intern.
  • Tourism Management students are interested in a broad variety of internships: from HR, to operations, and from marketing & communications to product development. For the AD programme we expect positions that lead to a ‘supervisory level’, and for the Bachelor students a position that leads to a ‘managerial level’.
  • The bachelor students can choose whether they want to do their bachelor dissertation for the company as well. If they choose to do so, the internship duration is 10 months, and during that period the student works on the dissertation for 1 day a week.
